And to your Left...Academia
Every once in a while, I read something that reminds me of my days as a professor. Then I take a Tums.
Charles Adler's got it exactly right. People have precious little tolerance for Conservative viewpoints in academia. Trust me -- I worked there for twenty years. If you have anything approximating large or small-c conservative values, you put up or shut up if you want to stay in the gang. If you're libertarian of any stripe, you should just leave.
The sad truth about this, though, is that universities socialize people. Is it any wonder, then, in this highly educated country of ours, that we have so many socialists?
On the other hand, in the Great Canadian West, where many people settled who actually had lived under socialist and communist rule in Europe, is it any wonder that the majority want to be anything but socialist?
Here's a gem from Adler:
....By the way, has anyone heard me even come close to breathing the word separatism in the last few minutes. I don't have to. By now every voter knows what nearly every elite professor refuses to admit. This coalition isn't about the Democratic will of the people as exercised in an election where they are given a choice of this Coalition versus this government. Everyone knows that this isn't about Democratic Judgment. It's about the two devils that are bedeviling the Three stooges. Those two devils are a) Seething Hatred and b) Blind Ambition
Sad, but very, very true. I really don't believe for one minute that the coalition was formed in response to anything the government said, proposed, didn't say, or didn't propose. Really, I think these guys were sharpening their knives and working on their "get Harper" plan all along.
